Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Young hatchlings often have the tightest nerves, starting at the slightest noise and developing fears of the most ridiculous things; among them being darkness. Strange and terrible things lurk in the darkness before one is old enough to understand that most of these "monsters" are of their own imaginations. But to Perrenelle, the dark was a whole other world, an alternate reality of the one she roamed in the light. She was always the first to leap into a dark corner that frightened the other hatchlings, diminishing the others' fears with her bravery.

But they always mistook her bravery to be fearlessness, and somewhere inside Perrenelle fear always took over whenever she was blinded by darkness. It was her curiosity alone that allowed her to see the friendly faces of what really lurked in the dark--- the benevolent spirits everyone else took to be monsters. As she grew, these spectral dragons became her friends, protecting her from harm and aiding her in return for her own help.
