When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Scylth acts as a sort of patriarch within the cave. He is younger than Xolor and Shamin but acts with the same amount of wisdom. He is a leader among the mature dragons of the cave, and hatchlings fear him for being a "grumpy gills. Mother dragons tell their hatchlings that if they do not behave themselves, Scylth will emerge from the Deep Pool and eat them. They are mostly exaggerating. He has two children in the cave from different mothers. His elder and prized daughter, Loraele, is the light of his life. His younger son, Magicar, was born to a more favored mate, but when things went south with her, so did the father-son relationship.

Scylth is one of the Council of Six. He often takes charge of the group and the cave as one of the greater leaders, but is prone to letting his temper get away from him. He especially finds himself in squabbles with Zarcain.
