Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Ra'eo, the black dragon. He was the first adult dragon recorded on Starbit's scroll, and figures himself rather important. He is rather aggressive, and sometimes has fights with other dragons on the scroll. Overprotective, he is the "big daddy" of the cave and cares a lot for eggs and hatchlings.

He was the only surviving egg of Starbit's early dragonkeeping, and has stuck to her very rigidly, even at maturity. Despite all his importance and pride, he would not cope well without her. His survival is a miracle, for he comes from weak, inbred genes, though only Starbit and him know.

Nobody is quite sure from what language Ra'eo's name originates. Starbit says it simply means "The Darkness". The villagers who live near Starbit's cave say when he flies over, he protects the young children of the village because he survived. If this is true or not, only he knows.
