Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Mettie, as he is often called, is a kind, warmhearted frill hatchling. He enjoys playing with Issabel Hanratty, making Reddie Rose green with envy, even though he is a Pink hatchie. He spends a lot of time wondering what his real parents were like, so he is often sad. Then only Funny Funky Friller or or Issabel can cheer him up. He says that if he and Issabel were not frozen, they would be mates.
